The trend of "minimalist weddings" has become a consensus for "reducing the burden" of love
"Our marriage is very simple, it's just a family gathering for a meal, warmly and lively." Zheng Zhiqiang, born in the 2000s, who lives in Bailu Village, Dongping Street, Lishui District, held his wedding during the May Day holiday. There is no dowry or grand ceremony, he said. The wedding is simple, happiness does not diminish, but their familiesare relaxed enjoyable.
The May Day holiday is the peak period for marriage. The reporter found in the interview that Lishui District has taken multiple measures to promote new and simplified weddings, and many young people are increasingly yearning for lightweight, small and beautiful weddings.
Choose "Minimalist Wedding" with reduced expenses but no reduction in blessings
There is no luxurious motorcade, no groomsmen and bridesmaids, no emcees and makeup artists, and no various venue scenery. The "minimalist wedding" of Zheng Zhiqiang and his wife was hosted by them themselves. After briefly introducing the process of getting to know and falling in love, family and friends sent their blessings one after another.
Zheng Zhiqiang said that he and his wife started dating in college and naturally entered the marriage hall after starting work. They calculated that if they had a grand wedding, they would need to hire an emcee, camera shooting, makeup artist, and pay venue fees. The total expenses would be at least 70-80 thousand yuan. "In our opinion, all of these can be saved," Zheng Zhiqiang said, as he and his wife decided to have a simple wedding.
When they shared the idea of having a "minimalist wedding" with both parents, their parents did not receive mutual recognition, but their persistence ultimately changed their parents’ minds. On the wedding day, all family and friends present praised this idea.
The couple's choice of a "minimalist wedding" is also closely related to the reform of marriage customs in Lishui. A Marriage and Funeral Council has been established in the village, and volunteers regularly learn about the marriage situation in the village and guide villagers to handle new and simplified weddings. Zheng Zhiqiang's father, Zheng Shiman, is a village committee official who often promotes new wedding customs and customs during visits. "When my son proposed to simplify the wedding, I was actually very pleased," Zheng Shiman said. This time, when his son got married, he didn't even send a wedding invitation. The family had originally prepared a sum of money, but the children saved it all after choosing to simplify the wedding. Now they are planning to use this money for their son's small home construction.
Abandoning high dowries, reducing the burden of love
During the May Day holiday, Mr. Zhou, who lives in the Lotus Community of Zhetang Street, Lishui District, also held a wedding. The two newlyweds only invited a few tables of family and friends, without any grand events. The bride also gave up the high dowry.
"Nowadays, it's popular to hold new happy events so that everyone can relax," Mr. Zhou said. Although his parents were initially reluctant, after doing their own work and being persuaded by volunteers from the community and Tilian marriage and family service team, they finally decided to simplify the event.
In recent years, the Lotus Community has actively promoted the reform of marriage customs and innovated the "Five Haves and Five Nos" work method, which includes: community party organization leadership, marriage management regulations constraints, participation of the Red and White Council, various forms of publicity and guidance, and professional services from social forces; Not too extravagant, not taking advantage of opportunities to accumulate wealth, not comparing gifts, not extravagant and wasteful, not vulgar and vulgar, leading a new trend in wedding customs. The Lotus Community has also formulated the "Regulations of the Marriage and Funeral Council " and incorporated the practice of changing customs in the field of marriage customs into the residents' convention. A system has been established to guide residents to abide by the new customs of marriage, encouraging them to have a dowry generally not exceeding 100000 yuan, a dowry not exceeding 50000 yuan, and a banquet of no more than 15 tables. At the same time, the community has established resident autonomous teams such as the Bingdilian Marriage and Family Service Team to promote and guide.
Peng Leying, the captain of the Marriage and Family Service Team, has a high reputation and good popularity in the community, and has been matchmaking more than 30 new couples in the past 10 years. She advocates for simple and new weddings, and since 2022, the service team has successfully convinced nearly 10 weddings that were originally planned for a grand celebration. Zhang Kanglong, Secretary of the Party Branch of the Lotus Community, said that in recent years, civilized weddings have gradually replaced vulgar wedding activities, and "exorbitant dowries" are rarely heard of. "Without comparison, people and wallets will not suffer!"
Celebrating new events with individuality, changing customs and creating new styles
As the first batch of experimental zones for marriage customs reform in Jiangsu Province, Lishui District has actively promoted marriage customs reform since 2020. The district organized and carried out the action of "governing high dowries, reducing the burden of human relationships, and promoting the transformation of customs", and issue implementation opinions. Innovate measures in various towns (streets) and villages (communities). By holding collective weddings and leveraging the exemplary roles of "silver haired couples" and "the most beautiful people", mass autonomous organizations such as village (neighborhood) Marriage and Funeral Council are established to address issues such as high dowries, wedding extravagances, and excessive burden of human relationships, breaking the mentality of "higher gifts, greater face".
Under the influence of changing customs and traditions, local residents have constantly changed their mindset, from high dowries and extravagant "face saving" ceremonies to simple and practical "essentials". Nowadays, young people are more inclined to admire modern weddings with distinct styles.
Experts suggest that a minimalist modern wedding can remove the traditional formalities of traditional weddings, not only reducing time and money investment, but also incorporating young people's creativity, making weddings easier.
